Founded in 1821 by royal charter granted by King George IV,[9] the university bears the name of James McGill was a Scottish Canadian businessman and philanthropist best known for being the founder of McGill University, Montreal. This university is one of Canada's best-known institutions of higher learning and one of the leading universities in the world. With students coming to McGill from over 150 countries, our student body is the most internationally diverse of any research-intensive university in the country. As of today, it holds three campuses starting on the main one which is Downtown Campus located between downtown Montreal and Mount Royal Park, Macdonald Campus which is located in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue followed by the third campus Gault Nature Reserve located in Mont-Saint-Hilaire. The university operates both men's and women's teams in U Sports that participates in numerous sports such as Hockey, Football and Boat Racing. McGill and Harvard are also athletic rivals, as demonstrated by the biennial Harvard-McGill rugby games, alternately played in Montreal and Cambridge.
